WHY? — Effective July 28, 2026
WHY? is built around a single idea: a brief, mindful pause before you open a chosen app. We collect as little as possible to make that work. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have.
By default WHY? works without an account. We generate a random local identifier on your device that exists only to organize your on-device settings (your chosen pause length, the apps you guard, and basic counts). This identifier is not linked to your name, email, or any cloud profile, and this data does not leave your device unless you choose to sign in.
Signing in is optional and only offered to sync and back up your settings. If you sign in with Apple or Google, we create an account and store:
If you block apps using Apple Screen Time, you select those apps through Apple's own system picker. Those selections are represented by opaque tokens that remain on your device at the operating-system level. WHY? cannot see which specific apps you chose and never transmits that selection off your device.
We rely on a small number of third parties to operate the app. They process data only on our behalf:
We keep your account data for as long as your account exists. When you delete your account, your account record and the cloud data associated with it are permanently removed. Settings stored only on your device are removed when you delete your account in the app or uninstall it. Crash reports are retained for a limited period by our reporting provider.
Depending on where you live (including under the GDPR and the CCPA), you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data, and to object to or restrict certain processing. You can delete your account and its cloud data directly in the app from the Account tab → Delete account. For any other request, contact us at the address below.
Your information may be processed on servers located in countries other than your own. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards for such transfers.
WHY? is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country, such as 16 in parts of the EU). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the effective date above and, where appropriate, provide notice in the app.
